Do cats need a distemper shot? What vaccines are essential for them?

I didn't get an answer for my question yesterday, Mitzi has been getting very aggressive lately, atacking us and scratching us badly, jumping on the back of our legs. Do cats need distemper shot ? Thank you.

I'm sorry you didn't get an answer yesterday! The distemper shot does not fix temperament, it's to protect against a deadly disease in dogs. No, cats do not get distemper like dogs do, they get feline panleukopenia virus.

I believe you mean the distemper vaccine. Feline distemper vaccine is a combination vaccine including feline viral rhinotracheitis, calicivirus and panleukopenia. You can give your local VetCo a call to make Oreo an appointment to get it done. At seven months of age, he should have one now, and another in four weeks to make sure he is fully protected. Great question! Feline core vaccines include FVRCP (feline distemper combo) and a Rabies vaccine. If Quinn is an outdoor cat, the FeLV vaccine (feline leukemia) should be considered. I hope this helps!

Hello, thank you for your question about Miskit. There are two 'core' vaccines required in cats, meaning that all cats should receive these vaccines regardless of their environment. All animals should be vaccinated against Rabies, even if they are indoor only, as Rabies can be transmitted to humans and is life threatening. The second vaccine that is considered required for all cats is called 'feline distemper' (the vaccine is often abbreviated FVRCP). This vaccine prevents cats from becoming infected with many life-threatening viral diseases. If your cat has never received this vaccine before, it is likely that your veterinarian will recommend he receive his first shot and then a booster vaccine 3-4 weeks later to ensure he develops appropriate immunity to these viruses. Starting at 8-10 weeks, she should have received a feline distemper vaccine every 3-4 weeks for a full set of three vaccinations. If she did not receive those, then she would need to restart a vaccine protocol appropriate for her age as directed by her regular veterinarian. If she received her vaccines as a kitten, then she would receive a booster every 1-3 years as directed by your regular veterinarian.

No, a distemper shot will not stop aggressiveness. A distemper shot is a vaccination that protects your dog against the distemper virus, which is a virus that makes terrible disease and many dogs that contract it die. No, it's not the same disease and cats cannot get parvo from dogs. She won't be protected from serious cat illnesses, however, since she hasn't had vaccines since she was young. You will need to update Rosie on them.

Yes, Luna should receive her vaccinations just like a "normal" cat - her condition does not have any effect on this :) It's true that cerebellar hypoplasia can be caused by certain types of infections in the mother during pregnancy, including distemper - but this does not confer any kind of long-lasting immunity to the kittens.

The current recommendations for the feline distemper series should start around 8 weeks of age (sometimes earlier) and be boostered every 3-4 weeks until about 16 weeks of age. As long as your kitten has had at least 2 vaccinations at least 3 weeks apart and the last one being at 16 weeks or older then that would be considered adequately vaccinated. I hope this helps! Feline distemper can last years in the envirom=nment. In order for your cats to be as safe as they can be, they need to complete their series of vaccinations. Since they are adults, that means they need two vaccinations given 3-4 weeks apart for maximum immunity benefits. I would get them both vaccinated again, then repeat it in 3-4 weeks, THEN I might consider letting them back into your bedroom, as long as everything possible inside it has been disinfected with a 1:32 solution of household bleach and water.
