My dog broke his nail in the snow. Is a vet visit really necessary?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed | Male | neutered

Hello there, my dog was running in the snow the other day and it seems as though he bent/broke his nail. I'm hoping no more serious than that. He hates going to the vet and having his paws touched, so we wouldn't want to go to the vet unless it's necessary. Please take a look at the posted photos. Thank you.

Hello. Ouch! Morty did break the nail at the quick. Honestly, it would be best to take Morty to your vet & just clip the nail off. It will hurt for a second, but leaving the nail like this will cause constant pain, & may lead to an infection up the nail bed. Your vet can dress this properly & send Morty home with some antibiotics & pain medication that will help this to heal quickly. Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach.
