My cat's wound suture came out. Should I re-suture or use a band-aid?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Domestic Shorthair | Male | unneutered | 7 months and 8 days old | 6.4 lbs

My cat had an avulsion wound at his hind leg which was sutured by the vet. It is his 4th day now but a suture was removed. Do i need to have this re-sutured or can i just use a band aid to have it protected? He uses an e-collar but can sometimes remove it when confined inside the carrier at night. He is currently on antibiotic and corticosteroid. I clean his site 2x a day with povidone iodine and topical antibiotic. Attached are pictures of before and after. I tried to place band aid. Is it okay

Hello. Poor Hooky. The band aid is not a bad idea, but they rarely stay on long enough to really protect a wound like this. I would actually be hesitant to recommend trying to reclose the skin because the deep tissues look a little compromised. Re-suturing may just fail again. Keep this as clean as possible & the tissues should start to fill in the defect. Try the band aid & see how it works. Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach.
