My pet vomited blood after Azithromycin. What to expect at vet?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | American Shorthair | Female | spayed | 9 lbs

Lupé finished Azithromycin yesterday and this afternoon she vomited blood, we're at an urgent care vet clinic waiting to be seen. I know that vomiting blood is a rare side effect, what can I expect once she is seen? She was already triaged.

The vet may recommend blood work or abdominal x-rays after performing a physical exam to make sure there are no other underlying diseases that may have caused Lupe to vomit blood. I would worry that this is unrelated to the azithromycin since she finished the medication yesterday.
