Does prednisone cause fast breathing in dogs? What are side effects?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Medium (23 - 60lb) | Male | neutered | 9 years and 11 months old | 34 lbs

Will prednisone cause fast breathing in a 34 pound mixed breed dog? Blood work on 12/7 had platelet count at 75. Likely caused by tumor on his leg. Rocco is 9 years old

Thank you for contacting Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach with your question about Rocco. No, it typically does not cause an increase in breathing. Prednisone causes increased thirst and urination, increased appetite, lethargy, vomiting, and diarrhea. If his breathing is really fast, I'd take him into a vet now. Best of luck.
