My cat needs CD food for crystals. How can I afford yearly vet tests?

i was told my cat needs to be on CD food for her urine crystals. now, a year later my vet is saying i need to pay $300 to have her go in and have a urine test in order to renew the prescription. but they told me she has to be on it for life. how can i find a cheaper way to keep her on this food? because i cant afford $300 a year to keep her on this food

I'm sorry Rose is having problems with urinary crystals! Unfortunately because it is a prescription food, that is how you are going to have to get it. The good news is that the urine test should only be once a year, so if you save $10 or $20 from each paycheck, by the time the urine test comes up, you can have saved enough to afford it.

It is recommended to have Rigby's urine checked. We would want to make sure that the food is still working and he is not developing crystals. It is always recommended to have twice-yearly checkups to make sure animals are still ok and to catch things early but especially with urinary issues. If there are crystals starting in Rigby's urine then a change in food would be recommended. This is ideally best medicine. If you are unable to bring in Rigby, I would discuss other options with your veterinarian. You have to have a physical performed at least yearly to keep with the laws of having a veterinary - patient - client relationship inorder to write prescriptions. Your veterinarian may allow you to collect the urine at home by using a non-absorbant litter. Thank you for using Boop by Petco.

My cat had urinary crystal obstruction, he now needs to be in a diet but vet prescription food is way too expensive. Is there an over the counter food that you recommend, to prevent him getting crystals again.
Unfortunately there is no over the counter diet that is comparable to a prescription urinary diet. I often recommend feeding a quality canned prescription diet only to try to dilute the urine as much as possible but sometimes crystals will still form. It is probably best to check in with your vet for their opinion since they know all the details about your cat's condition. In the long run it may be less expensive to continue feeding the prescription diet rather than going through another hospitalization for urethral obstruction.

Hi my cat speedy 6yrs old had really bad crystals earlier this year and pdsa put him on on specific crystal management food. Is there any other food brands I can use? His last weighing weight was 4.5kg.
Thank you for submitting your question regarding Speedy. If his veterinarian has recommended a prescription diet, then he should stay on one. Royal Canin Veterinary Diets Urinary SO, Hills Veterinary Diet C/D or Purina ProPlan Veterinary Diets U/R are all great choices to help prevent crystals in his urine. I hope this information helps!

How can I prevent a UTI for my cat? He was blocked and had to go to the vet and it wiped us financially. We can not afford to do that again. How can we keep this from happening again?
Any cat that has blocked in the past should be on a prescription urinary crystal dissolving diet for life such as Hills c/d or Royal Canin Urinary SO wet and dry. You can get these diets from your veterinarian or request a prescription from your veterinarian. These diets prevent formation of and help dissolve struvite crystals. Feeding at least a partially wet prescription urinary diet is also recommended as wet food provides more better hydration than dry food alone, thus minimizing the chances of recurring urethral blockages. Purchasing a water fountain also encourages drinking which will help minimize chances of a repeat blockage. Lastly, dosing of VetriScience UT Strength Feline chews can help minimize the chances of your Cat developing a urinary tract infections caused by bacteria. You can also look into different Pet Insurance plans and whether they will partially cover a repeat blockage if there is a history of one in the past. Best of luck!

An over the counter urinary care diet should be fine to give if you have concerns. I would also recommend regular yearly rechecks of urine with your vet as this is the best way to monitor Mushu for any changes that may need treatment or a switch back to a prescription medication again. If you do notice him having any issues again, a vet visit more quickly for treatment is best.

I'm sorry that you are having such problems with Lola! It certainly is possible that she has crystals in her urine, and taking her off the Rachel Ray food is probably a good idea. I'm not a fan of that brand at all, I personally think it's a poor quality food. Definitely give her canned food as well, add water to it, and make sure she drinks a lot of water to help flush the bladder. Keep an eye on her, and if appears she is straining to urinate, tries to urinate but nothing comes out, and/or howls when urinating, these can be signs her urethra is blocked. That is fatal without treatment and a medical emergency, so in that case she would have to see a vet immediately. Hello, sorry to hear about Jack. It really depends on what type of crystals your cat has, however, in general feeding canned wet food to increased moisture and water intake is generally recommended over dry food. Any wet food is preferable and it does not have to be specific for urinary stones. Some crystals are more likely to form with acidic urine and some are more likely to form with alkaline urine. However, they both benefit from having more water consumption which can be in the form for canned food. If you're unable to continue to feed the c/d food, then you may discuss transitioning to canned food with your veterinarian as a more feasible alternative. At this time, it is unclear if a urinary diet helps decrease the incidence of crystals. In regards to the nutritional content of the diet, it will be adequate to provide for Jacks' nutritional requirements as all diets are formulated following AAFCO guidelines. What a cute kitty! Your vet can prescribe a special prescription diet to help manage the crystals in his urine. The one we commonly prescribe is Royal Canin SO diet, but there are several others available as well. These diets help keep the urine pH at an appropriate level and can decrease or eliminate the crystals in the urine.

I would strongly advise against this. I would keep him on some form of food labelled for urinary crystal prevention. Urinary blockages can be a fatal emergency. Royal Canin, Hills, and Purina ProPlan are the three foods that use the most science in their nutrition. I have never heard of young again. Any of their foods that are labelled "S/O" are meant to prevent the formation of urinary crystals. Many urinary diets do have an increased caloric amount, and I sympathize that can be a struggle, but it is related to what keeps their urinary tracts healthy. You can try feeding canned food that is watered down to lower some calories. The extra water and hydration is great for the urinary tract as well. Feeding the food out of toys and feeders, instead of bowls in meals, to encourage their working for food and hunting behaviors can also help with their food intake.

It is a prescription diet so you will have to get a prescription from your veterinarian. I hope this helps!
