Why is my senior lab with arthritis struggling to breathe and gasping?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Hello I have an 11 year old male chocolate lab. He’s currently on metacam and gabapentin for his arthritis and has very low mobility. Tonight I noticed his breathing is more shallow than usual and it sounds like he’s gasping for air with every movement he tries to make. He seems to be having some difficulty trying to catch his breath. What could this be?

There are many things this could be: * laryngeal paralysis * congestive heart failure * severe pain * hypothyroidism * pulmonary thromboembolism * pneumonia * bloat * many more possibilities.... He really needs to get to the vet for an exam and possibly some blood testing and/or x-rays so you can get a diagnosis. Hope this helps. Best wishes.
