My cat's red, swollen, dry bottom: Is Vaseline safe until the vet?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Domestic Shorthair | Male | neutered | 9 lbs

My cat Bruno has a swollen red inflamed bottom. I will do my best to get him to see a veterinarian ASAP. Until then will it be helpful to him to put a dab of Vaseline on his bottom to help with comfort. Looks to be a bit dry.

Poor Bruno! I agree that it sounds like he needs to see a vet as soon as you're able to take him. In the meantime, it should be okay to use a small amount of Vaseline on the inflamed area to help keep it from drying out and becoming irritated. You may also need to place an e-collar (plastic cone) on Bruno to keep him from licking it until you're able to see the vet, as this will only make the inflammation worse.
