Bloody urine in my Maine Coon: Is an emergency vet visit needed?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Maine Coon | Female | spayed | 2 years and 11 months old | 15 lbs

For the past few weeks I've noticed my Maine Coon has developed boisy breathing when she sleeps. She doesn't seem bothered by it so I wasn't worried. This morning however I noticed bright red blood in her urine. We have to put puppy pads under her litter box because she is so large she frequently misses and she missed this morning which is how I saw it. I know she needs to see a vet but my question is does she need an emergency appointment right now or can she wait until tomorrow?

Poor Zelda! In general, if she's acting normal (eating and drinking, still active and social, and not appearing to be in any distress), I wouldn't consider this to be an emergency - but, I would definitely recommend taking her to your regular vet tomorrow for an exam, since it's never normal to see blood in the urine. It's hard to say what might be causing the noisy breathing or if this could be related to the urinary issues, but your vet can listen to her heart and lungs to see if anything seems abnormal.
