My cat's jaw is swollen and drooling. Is it a tumor or infection?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Domestic Shorthair | Male | neutered | 15 years and 11 months old | 7 lbs

Hello, my cat has been diagnosed with a possible tumor in his jaw. He was given antibiotics a week ago, and pain meds twice this past week. He is drooling a thick mucous, but still eating a lot. Is he in pain despite the pain meds, and would you say this sounds like a tumor versus an infection? We are going back to the vet tomorrow and I want to prepare myself for the worst. I want to ensure he’s not suffering. Thank you.

Poor guy. It is hard to saw if this is more likely a tumor than inection without seeing the mass itself. However, if the antibiotics were effective they would have shown much improvement within 4-5 days after starting them. Drooling could just indicate he is nauseous. Also if the swelling has gone down tremendously since starting the medication, then this is more likely not a tumor. I hope that things work out well for your pet G moving forward. Best of luck and take care : )
