Dog sick after treat: diarrhea, vomiting. Can I treat at home?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Medium (23 - 60lb) | Female | spayed | 5 years and 10 months old | 55 lbs

I gave my dog a Green Christmas treat with a rawhide attached at the end last night. She has had really soft stool basically diarrhea 4 times in 12 hours. This morning she threw up, green like that treat I gave her. Does this sound like an upset stomach that I should give more time before I take her to the vet? Her personality is fine. Not lethargic at all. She’s drinking water.

Poor girl. This certainly sounds like an upset stomach situation. You can try a few things today to see if she improves. 1) Bland diet- boiled plain chicken or lean ground turkey and white rice 2) Probiotic- over the counter Culturelle from your local pharmacy can help restore the normal GI flora 3) Fiber- add 1-2 tsp of canned pumpkin (not the pie filling) in her food daily As long as she remains active, does not start excessively vomiting and still has a good appetite, you can try these things for the next 24 hrs or so and see if she gradually improves her condition. I hope that your fur baby Mia is able to recover well from this upset stomach episode. : ) Best of luck moving forward and take care!
