My puppy drinks a lot, pees often, and smells sweet. Is this normal?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Medium (23 - 60lb) | Male | neutered | 6 months and 5 days old | 32 lbs

I fill my dogs water bowl between two and three times a day, and he also urinates about every hour two at the most. Is that normal? I also have noticed a pretty strong smell kind of sweet coming off of his entire body mostly after he is sleeping for a while.

Thank you for contacting Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach with your question about Kai. It depends on how much water his water bowl holds. If it's a small bowl, then yes this amount of water may be normal. He's a young puppy, so he won't be able to hold his bladder as long, and if he's drinking a lot of water, this amount of urination may also be normal. If he has a large water bowl and you are filling it this often, then this is not normal and may be a sign of a problem. In that case, have him seen by a vet. I'm not sure how to explain the sweet smell, have that checked out by a vet as well. I hope this helps!
