My cat eats little, grazes, and is losing weight. Is this normal?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Munchkin | Female | spayed | 1 year and 6 months old

My cat doesn't eat all her food in one go. She usually eats a little at first and occasionally returns for some more throughout the day. She does meow for food when we're cooking but when given food, she only eats a small amount. She's easily distracted and spooked by sounds and she isn't as active as other cats, she doesn't play with cat wands but does enjoy strings and hair bands. She was a skinny kitten, only chubby up after turning one but now she's losing a bit of that chubbiness.

This is not unusual behavior. In the wild, cats eat 9-16 times in a day. Since she is not over weight, you can continue free feeding her. Make sure she is checked regularly for worms and watch for any signs of illness. I hope this helps.
