My dog has chronic diarrhea, vet found no cause. What should I try?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Rottweiler | Male | unneutered | 27 lbs

We have an 8 month old Rottweiler who has eaten the same dog food his whole life, doesn’t eat human food, only drinks water and he gets diarrhea at least one week a month. It’s on and off! Everytime he goes to the vet he tests negative for worms and parasites he just finished antibiotics for diarrhea.

I suggest you put Gus on a probiotic for a month to see if it helps. I strongly recommend you use Fortiflora (no human probiotics). Fortiflora comes as a box of 30 packets - one packet on food daily so this will give you one month to see if it helps. If it does, great, you can keep him on it indefinitely. If it doesn't help then you need to go to more testing like for inflammatory bowel disease or food allergies. If accidentally dogs ingest very high quantity of probiotics they could experience diarrhea or stomach upset but Penny ingested only half packet more than the usual dose in one occasion two days ago, this amount shouldn't cause any side effect. I would test again the stool sample, maybe send it to an external laboratory for an extended examination that would look for intestinal bacteria and parasites, especially Giardia. Do not hesitate to post again on the forum or request a consultation if you would like to discuss it any further.

I recommend you put them all on a bland diet for a week (like boiled chicken and rice) and give them all Fortiflora probiotic for 2 weeks (each box will treat 2 dogs for 2 weeks). One packet on the food once a day. https://www.chewy.com/purina-pro-plan-veterinary-diets/dp/50029 You can buy it on Amazon too probably with free shipping as opposed to chewy's website. This was just so you can see what product I am talking about. It is by far the best probiotic out there. This way you can treat them all without them passing it back and forth. If this does not help you may have to take a fecal sample to your vet to have it tested for parasites. Hope this helps. If you have more questions please post again! Best wishes!

Hi and thanks for using Pet Coach! If Gizmo is acting otherwise normally I would start out with trying a probiotic for 30 days. Also, it is very common for puppies and young adult dogs to have intestinal parasites so if he has not been dewormed you should consider doing that as well. If no improvement after these treatments or if he is acting sick in any way I suggest you get him to a vet for an exam. These are the products I would recommend: ( https://www.allivet.com/p-1130-purina-pro-plan-veterinary-diets-fortiflora-dog-supplement-box-of-30.aspx ) ( https://www.allivet.com/p-1054-safe-guard-canine-dewormer.aspx ) Hope this helps. Best wishes.
