Why is 6 weeks of strict rest needed for my cat's disc injury?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Mixed Breed | Male | neutered | 15 lbs

My cat was at the vet yesterday for a hurt back, x ray indicated a couple discs in his back possibly leaking fluid which is irritating his spine. He’s got meds, will undergo laser therapy, and the vet said he needs to be on “bed rest” which means locked in a closet for 6 WEEKS. Is that necessary? 6 full weeks? He was really stern about it as well.

Hi there and thank you for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach to address your concern. Yes, strict rest is necessary for back injuries to prevent further damage to the spinal cord. Resting him will help decrease the inflammation in the spine from the injury. I hope this helps! Please let me know if you have any other questions or concerns and I would be more than happy to help you further.
