Why did my dog's black nail turn clear after allergy meds?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

One of my 10 year-old dog's normally black nails turned clear. She has been having allergy issues of late but is reacting well to her medication. Should I be concerned? Other than the loss of nail color it appears normal.

Is your dog on the steroid Prednisone? If so, this medication can cause them to lose some pigment in their skin. Otherwise, the nail looks healthy. I would just continue to monitor it and have her seen by your veterinarian if you notice any abnormality in the structure of the nail.
