How to stop my dog from herding and nipping another dog outside?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Border Collie | Male | neutered | 3 years and 7 months old | 61 lbs

How can I stop Loki herding our youngest dog in the paddock? They are fine indoors but whenever they go outside together Loki is constantly herding him and won’t stop to see who has arrived home sometimes because he’s that fixated on the youngest dog. Sometimes he starts nipping at him and the youngest dog is visibly getting tired of it. I really want it to stop but I have no idea how.

Thank you for submitting your question regarding Loki. I see from his profile that he is a Border collie. He was breed to herd animals and is simply following his natural instinct. This will be difficult to stop as it is ingrained in him. You may need to let the dogs out at separate times. You can try training him a stop command so that he knows when he needs to stop herding. I hope this information helps!
