My dog has an infected wound. Does he need tetanus or antibiotics?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | German Spitz | Male | unneutered | 6 years and 8 months old | 13.22 lbs

Hello I am from India. My dog got cut by something on his back/neck area. I didn't notice the wound bcos of the white fur which was hiding it. But later I noticed it. I seperated the fur and saw the wound. It was smelling bad and pus was oozing out of it. I cleaned the wound with Betadine and applied neosporin. I continued this for. 2 days and now the bad smell is gone and the wound is slowly starting to look good. Now do my dog need Tetanus vaccine or further antibiotics ?

Dogs do not typically get tetanus vaccinations. It is very rare for a dog to contract tetanus. If the wound is looking good, continue treating as you have been. If after 10 days of treatment it is not fully healed then oral antibiotics may be needed.
