Puppy ate onion, threw up yellow bile. Is she sick or just hungry?

I dropped a few little slices of chopped raw onion on the floor today and my 8lb, 11week old, springer spaniel puppy ate some. This happened at about 700pm and now its 300am and she puked a little bit of yellow bile after licking herself, she has been acting normal for the most part, but also had an early dinner so im not sure if she has an empty belly or if shes sick

Onions cause anemia if eaten in big enough amounts, but a few little slices shouldn't cause that. It may have upset Lucia's stomach. In the morning, feed her a bland diet of boiled white meat chicken (no bones) and white rice in small amounts several times a day for a couple of days. Then slowly add back in her normal diet. If she refuses to eat the bland diet, she vomits the bland diet, develops diarrhea, stops drinking water, starts vomiting water, or becomes very lethargic, she will need to see a vet right away.

Such a small amount of onion is unlikely to cause any toxic effect (linked to anemia and weakness after a few days) - it may be hamburger meat or other rich food which has triggered the vomiting. I would recommend giving oral rehydration fluids (pedialyte) and feeding small but frequent meals of a very low fat, bland diet such as boiled skinless chicken, brown rice and canned pumpkin (or canned specialist intestinal low fat diet). Hello, its likely that the onion in the broth was not sufficient to cause toxicity. Onion toxicity typically occurs in dogs that eat a large amount of onion and will cause anemia. Signs of anemia due to toxicity may include pale gums, panting, lethargy, labored breathing, and collapse. If any of these are noted, your puppy should be seen immediately. I am most concerned that the vomiting is likely secondary from the recent diet changes. You can offer him a bland diet of plain white rice, skinless and boneless chicken, and low fat cottage cheese for the next 3 days. If he is doing better, you may then encourage that he eats puppy food over cooked food. This is to ensure that your puppy has all of the essential nutrients he needs for his growing phase. Most commercial puppy foods are balances to support this stage of life. If your puppy is not improving on a bland diet, then she should be evaluated by a veterinarian as other things could be causing her signs. This includes any infec

The anemia could be caused by the onion. So it is likely your dog ate onion before. There are other causes of anemia as well, however since your dog is already in treatment for anemia, there is nothing else you need to do. Just make sure your puppy will not have any access to onion or garlic ever any more. This includes access to a compost heap, garbage can, and dry skins, as well as food cooked with onions.

If a pet is vomiting, it is best to withhold all food and medicine for at least 12 hours. Afterwards, a bland diet can be offered in small, frequent amounts. It is never recommended to give human medications to your pet without the advice of your veterinarian. Some medications can be toxic or may complicate any underlying condition. If she can keep the water down, continue with small frequent amounts. No more than a couple tablespoons (20-30 mls) at a time. Have her examined by your veterinarian in the morning. The foods she ate can certainly cause vomiting, but it is best to have serious illness or foreign body ruled out by the vet.

Poor Chloe! It's possible she could have some minor GI upset going on, as it sounds like she vomited up some bile. Picking up her food for a bit and then offering a bland meal of boiled rice and chicken can help settle minor GI upset. Sometimes, dogs may also vomit if they've gone too long between meals. Breaking meals into smaller, more frequent feedings, or feeding a small treat before bed/upon waking can sometimes help. If the vomiting continues, or Chloe shows any other signs of illness such as lethargy, refusing to eat, diarrhea, etc, then a vet checkup is best to make sure there isn't a more serious issue ongoing.

Throwing up can be caused by a food sensitivity, dietary indiscretion, intestinal parasites, an intestinal blockage, bacterial infection, viral infection, the weather, food change, stress, etc.  I would fast your dog for 24 hours and then put the dog on bland food for two days, such as boiled white rice and boiled white boneless chicken meat, fed in small quantities over several feeds and then transition back to regular food slowly over a few days. If this does not clear up the diarrhea or if the vomiting increases, or if your dog gets lethargic, he needs to see a veterinarian for an exam as there may be something more serious such as an infection or chronic pancreatitis going on.

Poor Gulliver! He could have an upset stomach from too many treats. If he is otherwise acting fine, you could withhold food for the day and then try a bland diet of boiled chicken and white rice and see how he does with that. If the vomiting continues or he becomes lethargic then he needs to be seen by your vet for treatment. Hope he feels better soon!

As most of these episodes are dietary related I would suggest to withhold food for the next 8-12 hours and then start feeding with a bland diet based on boiled chicken and rice in small portion every 6 hours for the following 48hours. Then gradually reintroduce the normal diet over 5 days. I would definitively recommend a veterinary check up if the signs persist or you notice diarrhoea, more vomiting, lethargy or inappetence.
