Why is my cat having diarrhea after dental cleaning and anesthesia?

My cat had a teeth cleaning and anesthesia today. He just tried to poop. It looks like watery cream of mushroom soup and the stench has filled the whole house. He also cried as he went. My husband thought it was a woman screaming

Sounds like poor Cheshire had some diarrhea. Feed him a bland diet of boiled white meat chicken (no bones) in small amounts several times a day for a couple of days. Then slowly add back in his normal diet. If the diarrhea continues on the bland diet, he starts vomiting food, stops drinking water, starts vomiting water, or becomes very lethargic, he will need to see a vet right away.

I am so sorry your cat has been having diarrhea! I would contact your veterinarian since your cat just had anesthesia for his dental procedure. Sometimes anesthesia can cause GI upset. Also, it sounds like you just changed the food. Did you do a slow transition of food? A quick transition of food can cause GI upset as well. I would recommend starting a probiotic and also contacting your veterinarian. Your veterinarian may be able to help you by sending home a medication, like metronidazole, for the diarrhea. Thank you for submitting your question regarding Butter. Unfortunately, diarrhea can have many causes. Convenia is the most likely cause, but anesthesia could cause it as well as the stress of her visit or an underlying medical condition. If there is blood in the stool or she is acting sick, then she will need to see a veterinarian today. This doesn't sound like the case based on your post though. Otherwise, I recommend that she sees her veterinarian tomorrow. It is easy for her to become dehydrated from the ongoing fluid loss in the stool. The veterinarian will examine her and determine how best to treat her and resolve the diarrhea. For example, subcutaneous fluids, probiotics and possibly antibiotic may be warranted. Poor Blue! The anaesthetic combined with the pain of the teeth clean can really upset their tummies. You could try feeding a diet of plain chicken and rice for a few days, but I'd urge you to give your vet a call. They shluld be able to prescribe you a gastroprotectant liquid that can help settle the tummy. If the diarrohea dies not settle it will need to be treated too.

I am glad to hear she seems to be feeling well. Occasionally, the Gi tract will have a mild temporary change during/after anesthesia which can result in the changes in the stool that you saw. I would recommend that you feed her a bland diet (boiled chicken and white rice) for the next couple of days. As long as she's acting normally, eating, and isn't vomiting, I don't think you need to be too concerned. Thanks for asking Boop by Petco!

Poor Monster. Don't give him milk. Cats are lactose intolerant, and the milk is likely making things worse. The incision is holding together. Yes, typically the stitches are not pulled tight at the time of surgery to allow for the skin swelling that naturally occurs after the surgery. As for the diarrhea, it could be due to stress or any medications Ella was given after surgery. I can give you a home remedy for her to see if that helps. Withhold food for 12 hours, then feed a bland diet of boiled white meat chicken (no bones) in small amounts several times a day for a couple of days. Then slowly add back in her normal diet.
