Is it okay to neuter a cat with feline leukemia? What are the risks?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | American Shorthair | Male | neutered | 8 lbs

Hes about 6 months and he recently tested positive for feline leukemia. I had scheduled him to get neutured before we didnt know hes positive but after we found out we had to wait for a while. My vet said since hes healthy you can go ahead and get him neutured now. Should cats with feline leukemia even get neutered? I mean they have a short life.... also are there risks?

Hello. Not all feline leukemia positive cats will come down with active disease. If Scruffy is absolutely well & healthy now, then I would definitely get him neutered. He could possibly have a pretty normal life, & he will be a much more pleasant cat with the surgery. You will also need to absolutely keep him indoors to protect him, so that is even more important reason to get him neutered. Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach.
