My cat keeps licking a raw spot. Is it a hot spot or skin issue?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Domestic Shorthair | Female | spayed | 12 lbs

What does this look like to you? I realize best thing to do is go to vet but I would like possibilities before going so I know what to expect. Cat is 2.5 yrs old.

Hello. This looks like an area of moist dermatitis, essentially a "hot spot". Something has irritated River's skin & caused her to lick so hard as to damage the skin. Your veterinarian will possibly administer a steroid that will cool the reaction & allow the skin to heal. Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach.
