Why is my senior Lab having trouble breathing and gagging at night?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Labrador Retriever | Female | spayed | 11 years and 1 month old | 67 lbs

My 11 year old lab seems to be having trouble breathing at night while laying down. She will go through bouts of gasping and then what sounds like gagging... she has severe skin allergies and is in apoquel and steroids. Other than that she is healthy. I have a video but cannot upload it of her breathing, we do have an appointment with her vet this week

You can request a consult online with one of our vets to share the video. She is an older girl, and trouble breathing can be a sign of something serious like heart disease. It is a good idea to have Zoe seen by her vet this week.
