My 8-month-old cat has new brown spots in her eye. Is it melanoma?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Domestic Shorthair | Female | spayed | 8 months and 5 days old | 7 lbs

My 8 month old cat cali was born with a brown mole/freckle in her iris . She is calico . I’ve noticed that now she has developed more spots around her pupil as well but small spots . She is perfectly healthy and is in absolutely no pain. I worry it is iris melanoma . I will attach photos below

It could be iris melanoma but there is no way to know just by looking at a photo. You should have a veterinary ophthalmologist check the eye if you are really worried. At Cali's age I highly doubt it is melanoma but it is possible.

Brown discharge often indicates infection or a corneal scratch. From the photo, the right eye appears blue which can indicate significant injury or corneal dystrophy (I;m not sure rather if this is an old issue or is recent). I recommend to play it safe and have J examined by the veterinarian. He should also wear an elizabethan collar to prevent rubbing the eye which could cause further injury. I hope this helps.

Hi there and thanks for posting! Color changes to the iris (the colored part of the eye) can happen as cats age. I would not worry about the color change to brown unless the color starts looking red or swollen or irritated. If the eyes looks normal otherwise, then I wouldn't worry too much. I would still have your vet take a look at the eye during her vet visit just to be sure. I hope this helps and thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach!

Common causes of the symptoms you have describe include blocked tear duct, allergies, bacterial or viral infection, among a few others. Any vet can easily take a look and decide on an appropriate treatment. I would recommend calling the specific wellness center you are interested in to see if this is a service they can provide. The experts at Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach do not have direct access to various clinics, even if they are associated with PetCo.
