My dog is in pain and not pooping. Does he need emergency vet care?

Pet's info: Dog | Yorkipoo | Male | neutered | 1 year and 5 months old | 11 lbs

My 11 pound dog has only pooped twice in the last 36 hours. He’s constantly sitting down and tries to bite/lick at his rear. He wants to be held more often than usual. He whines from discomfort every now and then and has shivered a couple times. I called the vet’s office and have an appointment for tomorrow at noon. Is my dog’s problem a lot more serious than it seems? Do I need to take him to emergency care or can I wait 24 hrs?

Poor Gummy Bear. I am concerned about him, and without seeing him in person, I can't say it will be ok to wait until tomorrow. Due to that, I think it's best to get him checked out now with the ER vet.

Poor Gummy Bear! I'm concerned that it's still bleeding and from the pictures, it appears he could need stitches. I think the best thing to do is take him into urgent care immediately to get this treated. I hope this helps.

Poor Peanut! He definitely does need to have this checked out by a vet, since it sounds like he'll likely need to have the affected tooth extracted and the area checked to make sure he doesn't have a broken root still stuck in the tooth socket. But if he seems comfortable right now and isn't overly painful, it should be fine to wait until tomorrow and see your regular veterinarian rather than going to an ER tonight.

Depending on the length of time that has elapsed since his last bowel movement, and if he is actively straining to defecate, this may or may not be an emergency situation. Based on what you have written, you seem to think he's quite ill and in need of medical attention. While I appreciate you can't get to your regular vet until after the holiday weekend, it may be in his and your best interest to take him to the ER for an immediate work up. There are several different causes for inability to defecate including generalized constipation, some sort of obstruction / blockage, certain masses in / around the GI tract, organ enlargement elsewhere, prostatic enlargement, and some less common neurologic causes. A thorough diagnostic work up and physical exam will need to be performed before making a determination as to the root cause of Hunlee's issue. Hope this makes sense.

Thank you for submitting your question regarding your dog. It would be best if he could be evaluated today. Being a toy poodle, he is small. It will be very easy for him to become dehydrated from the loose stool. He sounds nauseous by the way you described the lip smacking. I suspect that he is not eating well. He could be painful from gastrointestinal upset or it is common for small breed dogs to experience neck or back pain. While he could be constipated, a lot of dogs with strain with diarrhea only passing a drop or two. So it appears that they are unable to defecate. In the meantime, try to encourage him to drink water and eat if he is interested. I hope this information helps!

It's best to take him to the ER, but it's possible that this can wait until tomorrow morning. I would need more information to make this call and you may consider having an online consult with one of our vets on Boop by Petco. I worry about this being a sign of a reaction to the medications, so I would at-least stop giving medication until you can talk with your vet. Poor Oswald! If he is shaking from the pain and not able to eat then you could take him to an emergency clinic for an exam and treatment. He could have a bad tooth that is causing him a lot of pain and may need medications to help relieve the pain. Pain medication would make him a lot more comfortable overnight until his regular appointment tomorrow. You could also call your vet and give him/her an update and see if he/she would just prescribe a pain medication for tonight. Hope he feels better soon!

I'm sorry Grayson isn't doing well! Because he's alert and drinking water, it's ok to wait to take him into the vet in the morning. Now if the diarrhea continues, you see blood in it, he becomes very lethargic, and/or he starts vomiting, then I would take him into an ER vet tonight. Best of luck, I hope this helps.

I'm sorry Diesel hasn't been doing well at the moment! You absolutely did the right thing by making a vet appointment, and your question as to if this is an emergency is a good one. Given that he is having diarrhea so frequently, you are seeing some blood in it, and there is concern that he is dehydrated, I do think it's best he sees a vet sooner rather than later. Senior dogs are at an increased risk of dehydration, and it's very important to have that treated right way. I do recommend taking Diesel into an ER vet tonight based on his current symptoms. My dog has been having great pain when he has bowel movement with blood coming out. I took him off all food for 24hrs to see if he would do better. He did for 24hrs. But this morning at 2am. He was curled up in pain and you can here his stomach. Then
I would call your vet and ask to be seen sooner, worked in between appointments, or find another vet that can see him, preferably today. Pain should not be left for days without being investigated. He may have eaten something that has it=rritated or injured his gi tract towards the end since the blood is so red. If it were bleeding higher, such as the stomach, the blood would be digested and be tarry and black. Whichever vet you see should do an exam, labwork and probably x-rays as well to determine what is wrong and based on these results they will be better able to tell you the best treatment plan.
