My 1.5 year old Heeler has diarrhea with blood in it. She’s done this before and we were told she just had a upset stomach And was provided medication. She is not lethargic, she just eats slower than usual but still eats all of her food. We are thinking she had gotten into the trash but this has been happening for almost a week

Thank you for submitting your question regarding Cricket. If she has had diarrhea with blood for a week, this is worrisome. She needs to see her veterinarian. Blood, if it bright red, is typically from the colon. There are bacteria in the feces that are now open to the bloodstream. It is important to determine the cause of her symptoms such as pancreatitis, a bacterial overgrowth or an intestinal infection. If she is vomiting blood, hemorrhagic gastroenteritis is possible. It is a good idea to start her on medication before she becomes more sick. I hope this information helps!

Hi there and thank you for using pet coach to address your concern. If you are seeing spots of blood on the stool now, it is likely secondary to the diarrhea that she had which caused a bit of inflammation in the colon. It sounds as if the diarrhea has resolved but you are seeing a small amount of blood. I would not be too concerned about this and would continue feeding a bland diet until the srool is back to 100% normal. I would also consider adding in a probiotic such as Purina fortiflora. If the blood does not go away after 3 to 5 days or worsens then I would have a veterinarian examined her and test a fecal sample for signs of intestinal parasites or bacterial overgrowth. I hope this helps! Please feel free to contact me if you have any other questions or concerns. I am also available via consultation if needed
