My dog ate a large smoked pork bone. Is it safe or dangerous?

our dog, Charlie, just ate a large smoked pork bone, it was about six inches long. he is about 6 years old and an american staffordshire terrier

Oh no, that's not good! Cooked bones should never be given to dogs because they easily splinter and puncture the GI tract, causing perforation and obstruction. Do NOT induce vomiting. Keep an eye on Charlie. If you see vomiting, diarrhea, blood in the feces, lethargy, or loss of appetite, have him seen by a vet immediately.

If it happened in the past hour I would recommend heading to an emergency vet - they can potentially take an x-ray and determine whether or not it would be worthwhile to attempt to induce vomiting. If the bone was sharp or very large there are risks to inducing vomiting so it may not be worthwhile. Unfortunately I find that pork bones in particular can cause obstructions or constipation. If the vet decides there is too much risk to inducing vomiting they may prescribe some medications to help protect the stomach or a diet change while monitoring closely for any vomiting, decrease in appetite, or difficulty defecating.

Are pork chops safe for dogs? My dog ate a pork bone.
Depending on the size of the pork chop eaten, monitor for signs of GI upset including vomiting, diarrhea or loss of appetite. If the bone was ingested, a visit to your vet is recommended if it was a large piece of bone that could pose an obstruction hazard.

Dogs will be dogs! As a veterinarian, I always recommend to my clients not to allow their pets to consume any cooked bones. As you have already intimated, these tend to break up into shards or splinters, leading to potentially disastrous consequences. It certainly sounds like the pork Sargent consumed is not agreeing with him in one way or another. Two episodes of vomiting by itself is not terribly many. However, if you note continuing vomiting throughout the next few hours, I would absolutely recommend seeking medical attention. In addition to a bone splintering and causing physical damage to the GI tract, theses types of foods have also been known to cause pancreatitis. The clinical signs of this condition will include lethargy, vomiting, and unwillingness to eat. Another thing to look out for over the course of the next several hours will be any blood in the feces. At this point, just watch for vomiting and diarrhea. If he starts vomiting than he needs to be examined by a vet to determine if he has an obstruction. It may pass through fine but you should monitor him closely.

Oh no, that's not good. This may cause some problems, but do not induce vomiting. I would keep a close eye on Snickers for the next couple of days. My 22 pound rat terrier ate a cooked pork chop bone off the counter while I had my back turned. I tried to get it from her but tan under the bed and chewed it and swallowed it before I could get it away from her. Do I need to rush her to the ER vet?
Oh no, that was naughty of Sadie to eat the cooked pork chop bone off the counter! Yes, you can give her some bread which will cushion the sharp bites, and while inducing vomiting is not typically recommended, you could take her into an ER vet now to see if they can remove the bone with an endoscope to prevent any chance of obstruction or perforation. Your other option is to monitor her and hope that it passes without problem. Give her a slice of whole wheat bread with every meal so that it will hopefully form a ball of ingesta around the bone and cushion it as it passes through the GI tract. While monitoring her, watch her for signs of vomiting, anorexia, lethargy, diarrhea, bloody feces, or blood in the vomit. Should you see any of those signs, rush Sadie into a vet immediately. You did the right thing taking the ham bone away from Gator. Bones cause broken teeth, and if the bone is cooked, it can easily splinter in the GI tract causing perforation and obstruction. I never recommend giving bones to dogs. I would monitor him for now, and if he starts excessively drooling or having trouble eating, have him seen by a vet. I hope this helps!

I have a 60+ lbs and 6 lbs dog who ate cooked pork bones. They went and I do not see blood. But my 6 lbs been vomiting all night and shivering. My 60+ lbs is acting normal so far. What steps should I take to monitor them?
Given that Harmony has been vomiting all night, she should be a vet immediately. Pork should never be fed to dogs because the high fat content can cause pancreatitis, and the vomiting can be symptomatic of that. The bones could also be causing the vomiting, as they can cause obstruction in the GI tract. The vet can do a physical exam, blood tests, a urinalysis, and x-rays to diagnose what is causing Harmony's vomiting and can treat her for it. Please find a vet on call to see her now or take her into an ER vet.

Cooked bones are never good to give to dogs because they easily splinter in the GI tract causing obstruction and perforation of the intestines. Titus may be in pain from chewing it if he swallowed pieces of it. Keep a close eye on him, and if this keeps happening, take him into a vet right away. Take away the bones from both dogs.

Oh no, that's not good that Tank ate those chicken bones! Unfortunately, there is nothing you can do for him now but just monitor him. It's not recommended to induce vomiting at this point in time, as too much time has passed since he ate the bones. In addition, it's not recommended to induce vomiting in a dog who ate bones because they can easily become stuck in the esophagus. He is a big boy, and depending on how many bones he ate, there is a chance they could pass without problem but there is also a chance they could cause an obstruction and/or perforation of the intestines. Cooked bones splinter easily in the intestinal tract, thus potentially leading to the perforation of the intestines. Closely monitor him for at least the next 72 hours. If you see any vomiting, lethargy, anorexia, diarrhea, constipation, bloody diarrhea, or blood in his vomit, take Tank into the vet immediately. I would monitor his feces for signs of the bones, and if you don't see any pass in the 72 hour
