Why is my new deaf cat terrified, meowing, and has eye discharge?

Hi, I’ve just adopted a deaf cat a couple of days ago, when I first brought him home he was fine and very loving but something happened through the night and now he’s terrified of everything, he meows loudly all night and won’t come out of his hidey hole. I adopted another cat when I got him and he has adjusted fine. I am also noticing the deaf cat now has very wet eyes, and like a yellowish colour dripping from them

It sounds like Marshall has an eye infection. That needs to be checked out by a vet promptly. I'd take him into one now. While there, the vet can give him a health check and discuss this behavior at night.

The discharge may be an indication of conjunctivitis or a respiratory infection. These are often due to viruses and cause then to have a fever and a decreased appetite and not feel well. If he is. It better by tomorrow then I would have your vet check him

Hi! I think my kitten has an eye infection- I just adopted him this weekend - he is approximately 9 months old.
Poor Pete! Squinting and discharge from the eye are common signs of an eye infection. He will need prescription eye drops from your veterinarian to treat this problem, so I would recommend taking him in for an exam as soon as you are able to. In the meantime, you can try gently flushing his eye with plain saline eye wash, and wipe away the drainage with a warm washcloth or cotton ball as often as needed. This will not treat the underlying infection, but may help to make him a bit more comfortable until you are able to see the vet.

It sounds like Marshmallow has an eye infection, and that requires prescription medication from the vet. Any eye problem needs to be checked out promptly by a vet, as leaving it untreated can lead to vision loss. Please take her into a vet today. Best of luck.

The best way to check for deafness is to snap your fingers behind Alice's head. You must make sure she does not know you are approaching her, that you do not touch any of her hair and that a breeze is not created that may move her fur. If she doesn't react, then you know that she is deaf. If that area on her cornea is new or if the eye shows any inflammation or squinting, you should have it checked out by her veterinarian. Cats can get scars, cornea dysplasia and a few other conditions that may fit your description. When in doubt, have it checked out. A Feliway diffuser or Royal Canin Calm diet food may help Alice to have less anxiety in general and you may consider trying them. How lovey of you to rescue Zaytoune! I would have him seen by a vet asap. He does sound ill if he has discharge next to his nose and eyes, and it can be a sign of respiratory infection. Young kittens are extremely fragile, so it's important to have any problem with them checked out right away by a vet. You are doing the right thing by keeping him warm, and I would check out this website for further information on how to care for him: http://www.2ndchance.info/orphankitten.htm By the time Zaytoune is four weeks old, you can start weaning him onto solid food. To do this, I would soak a high quality kitten formulated dry food in warm water until soft. Then mix that with kitten formula such as KMR to make a mush the consistency of oatmeal. Over the next two weeks, gradually increase the amount of dry kitten food and decrease the amount of water and KMR you use until he is eating the dry kitten food only.

He needs to be examined by a vet. Common causes of diarrhea in a kitten from a shelter situation would be intestinal parasites (worms, coccidia, giardia). The sneezing and eye discharge are often caused by a viral upper respiratory infection. They generally run their course, but some of them respond to supplementing with L-lysine cat treats.

Thank you for providing a picture of the kitten! It looks like he could have an eye infection or may have injured his eye. He will need to see a vet immediately for this, this is not something that can be treated at home. The eye is such a delicate and important structure that any problem with it should be considered an emergency. That's because leaving it untreated can lead to vision loss. Since you just adopted this kitty I would call the shelter and ask them whether you can bring him to the shelter veterinarian (or the designated veterinarian for the shelter) for another exam as this emerged this morning. This is likely a respiratory or an eye infection and should be seen by a vet before it gets worse. Depending on the diagnosis the vet will use various eye medications (serum, or antibiotic ointment, possibly Lysine, all depending on the kind of infection) and possibly oral antibiotics. Usually the body's immune system can fight such infections very well in relatively short time if caught early and before bacteria can take advantage of the situation. And congratulations to your new family member!

Many shelter kittens are exposed to various bacteria and viruses, and upper respiratory infections are common. I recommend that you help Nesquick keep the eye clean by using a warm wet wash cloth to gently wipe away the discharge. If the eyelids or conjunctiva appears swollen, then he should be checked out by a vet. Some viral infections of the eye can lead to blindness. Since most of these infections are viral, they will need time to run their course. Antibiotics may be used even with primary viral infections to make sure that we are helping the body fight off any secondary bacterial invaders. I would make sure that Nesquick sees a vet if he has a poor appetite, is progressively lethargic, or has a rectal temperature over 103.
