My cats are sick, one after another. Why do they have eye issues?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Havana Brown | Male | neutered | 8 years and 10 months old | 17 lbs

I have two cats and about two weeks ago my youngest cat got really sick (weak in both front paws, would sleep all day and night, wouldn’t eat, or poop) and my vet wasn’t sure what was going on with him, but she prescribed him antibiotics to see if they helped. They did help, but then a week later he got teary eyed for about three days and then it just went away. Now my oldest cat has half of his right eye shut & is teary eyed. I’m not really sure what’s going on with them and neither does she.

Thank you for submitting your question regarding your cats. It is possible that they are experiencing an outbreak of calicivirus. It typically causes respiratory tract infections which can affect the eyes. Some kittens will become very painful due to it affecting the joints. Some cats will develop ulcers in the mouth as well. I hope this information helps!

Thank you for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! It sounds like Iris and her companion are not feeling well. They may have two different conditions, which are unrelated, or both have the same condition. Your cats may have gotten into a toxin (plant, cleaning liquid, detergent, etc), eaten human food that they shouldn't have, or both have a viral or bacterial infection. I recommend having both cats seen by a vet as soon as possible to determine what is going on. They may require fluids and nutritional support. I hope this helps and that all is well!
