My dog has a liver shunt and won't eat his dry food. What to do?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Small (up to 22lb) | Male | neutered | 1 year and 3 months old | 10 lbs

I have a malshi with a liver shunt and he is on the hills ld food currently. He prefers the wet food but we want him to eat hard food. We’ve also been looking into the hepatic food. Any suggestions to get him to like his plain dry food? (We have mixed the wed and dry but he picks out the wet and leaves the dry) we’ve also tried to just cut all wet food out and do the starvation method but he lost 1.5 pounds so we went back to the wet food. Thanks!

You might try gradually decreasing the amount of canned food added to the dry food. You can also try switching the dry food to a different hepatic diet to see if the new kibble will be more exciting. You can also try soaking the kibble in some warm water (and continue mixing in the canned food) til it softens so that Louis cannot pick it out. Gradually decrease the amount of canned food. Then gradually add less and less water. This will need to be slow. I hope this helps and please feel free to post any additional questions.
