My dog ate cat food and has bloody diarrhea. What should I do?

Hey so i have a toy poodle named cinnamon who is 10 years old and 5 months and is 4.5 lbs. he got neutered on the 25th and was doing fine until i accidentally bought him wet food that i thought was for dogs but it was for cats. after eating it, he got diarrhea all day and vomited once and at night time he had diarrhea again but it had bits of blood in it. today is thanksgiving and he hasn't pooped or peed all day but he has been very active and hyper and he has been eating.

The sudden change in diet could be the cause of those symptoms. If he's acting normally now, no vomiting, no more blood in his poop, and is eating, I'd just keep an eye on Cinnamon for now. Should his symptoms return, have him seen by a vet.

Hello- Sudden diet changes can cause both diarrhea as well as constipation. The blood could indicate significant inflammation in the colon from diarrhea, diet changes, an infection and/or other causes. Anytime there's blood in the stools it is recommended your pet see their veterinarian as some cases require antibiotics and possibly fluids as the diarrhea and inflammation can cause dehydration.

Hello. I am always concerned when there is blood in the stool for more than a day or so. At this point, it is difficult to say if the cat food caused this or something else is going on, like parasites, or some form of enteritis/colitis. I would definitely consider a trip to your vet to make sure there is not an ongoing problem & possibly starting Tika on a course of antibiotics. I hope she is feeling better soon. Diarrhea and throwing up can be caused by a food sensitivity, dietary indiscretion, intestinal parasites, an intestinal blockage, bacterial infection, viral infection, the weather, food change, stress, etc.  I would fast her for 24 hours and then put her on bland food for two days, such as boiled white rice and boiled white boneless chicken meat, fed in small quantities over several feeds and then transition back to regular food slowly over a few days. If this does not clear up the diarrhea or if the vomiting increases, or if your dog gets lethargic, it needs to see a veterinarian for an exam as there may be something more serious such as an infection going on.

Poor Bailey! Cat food is often tasty to dogs but unfortunately it is hard on their GI tracts. Puppies especially do not tolerate rapid diet changes, which can lead to bacterial imbalance in the intestines and diarrhea with blood. Because Bailey is still a young puppy, the diarrhea could also be caused by an intestinal parasite. It's a good idea to bring her into the vet so they can perform a fecal test and prescribe anti-diarrhea medication as needed. You can feed her a bland diet of white rice and boiled low-fat chicken breast to try to settle her stomach in the meantime. I hope she feels better soon!

Poor Milo. This diarrhea could be caused by dietary indiscretion, a stomach illness, eating something rotten, or a foreign body among other causes. The concern here is blood in his stool. You can feed him his canned food, but I strongly recommend you take him into a vet now to get this treated. The vet can diagnose what is causing his bloody diarrhea and can treat him. Please take him into a vet immediately. Best of luck.

Thank you for submitting your question regarding Romesh. I recommend that he sees a veterinarian. The blood is typically from the colon. It can be due to inflammation from the diet change or an intestinal infection. Other internal diseases such as pancreatitis can cause this signs as well. His veterinarian will evaluate him and determine if fecal testing or bloodwork are necessary. I hope this information helps!

My dog was pooping really hard poop almost a week ago so we started giving her wet food. It's been around 4-5 days that she's been in the wet food. She has diahrea now and she threw up vile 3 times in the last hour and a half.
Cinnamon's diarrhea could be caused by the abrupt change in food or there could be something else going on that caused the constipation/hard stools in the first place. Since this has been going on for several days I would recommend taking Cinnamon to the vet to be checked out. You vet will probably to a fecal exam to check for intestinal parasites and may need to do X-rays since she is vomiting as well. If Cinnamon does have colitis (an inflammation of the colon causing diarrhea) she will need antibiotics and possibly probiotics to helps get her stools back to normal. These signs could be compatible with a colitis, which is an inflammation of the last part of the colon, usually related to dietary indiscretion. As a first approach, I would suggest to start feeding with a bland diet based on boiled chicken and rice in small portion every 6 hours for the following 48hours. Then gradually reintroduce the normal diet over 5 days. I would definitively recommend a veterinary check up if the signs persist or you notice vomiting, lethargy or inappetence. Poor pup! The vomiting and diarrhea could be due to eating the human food but other things like bacterial over growth, parasites (worms and giardia) or even something more severe like an intestinal blockage could be to blame. The blood indicates that his intestines are severely inflamed. I recommend to have your pup examined by the veterinarian today if at all possible. He can receive medications that can make him feel better and resolve the inflammation much faster (and hopefully stop any progression of the condition). Sometimes times a bland diet can help and then a slow, gradual introduction to the normal food can be done. A bland diet can consist of 25% boiled white meat chicken and 75% boiled white rice. This should all be plain. Make sure your pup is drinking water. Break up the meals into smaller amounts than normal and fed more frequently. I hope your pup starts feeling better quickly! Bloody diarrhea is serious, and our dog could be suffering from hemorrhagic gastroenteritis caused by eating the raw meat. When a dog has bloody diarrhea, it's always recommended to take them into a vet right away. She needs medical treatment for her symptoms, so please take her into an ER vet now. If you don't have one in your area, there will be a vet on call for emergencies. The information to reach that vet can be found on a clinic's answering machine or website.
