Can I give my dog turmeric if she has CHF and takes benazepril?

Pet's info: Dog | Rottweiler | Female | spayed | 115 lbs

My dog has CHF. She is on benazepril. Is it safe to also give her tumeric? I hate giving her all of these meds and would love to find something natural and healthier for her. She is a rottie, weighs about 115 and is 9-10 years old. (Was a stray)

I would not stop the benazepril. Unfortunately there is no scientific proof tumeric works, and leaving Lucy's CHF untreated would be awful for her. You can give it to her in addition to the benazepril.

I cannot find any specific contraindications between trilostane and tumeric, so either there are no problems using the two together, or nobody knows, because it's never been tested. Tumeric is occasionally used in animals to reduce inflammation associated with arthritis; however I have not heard of its specific use in treating Cushing's disease.

Yes, it’s fine to give. Please follow the directions. I would also give her an Omega3 supplement since that will also reduce the inflammation and her pain from the arthritis. You may also want to consult a Rehabilitation Veterinarian in your area. They can give home care exercises, build muscle strength with hydrotherapy and many also do acupuncture to reduce the pain. There are really no scientific studies demonstrating efficacy of tumeric for conditions in dogs, but there is some information about it helping with gastritis, parasites and liver disease with mice. However, the dose used was 500mg/kg, which is a lot of tumeric. Without there being any good information about its use or the recommended dosage, I cannot recommend it for allergies. It's a very safe spice to give, so you can always give it, but I can't say that it will do anything. Additionally, tumeric will not be nearly as effective as the prescription medications. I understand that the prescription medications can have some undesired side-effects, but Apoquel is a promising new drug with less side effects; so it looks like you are already giving him the best treatment. Another option is to have a skin and blood test to try and determine what he is allergic to. After this is done, an allergy shot can be formulated; which is about the most natural and effective thing you can do

My Chi Snoopy finished his script of Prednisone. I since have been sprinkling a pinch of dry tumeric on his food. This leaves me wondering if it is helping any of his pain from inflammation. And does it affect his levels of blood glucose.
Turmeric is said to possess natural anti inflammatory properties. It may also promote regulation of blood glucose levels. Sprinkling this spice on food is not as effective as making a paste. The paste is better metabolized reaping the most benefits. You can use your preferred online search engine and search for "golden paste, turmeric" for a recipe of which there are many.

That unfortunately has not been scientifically proven and as far as my knowledge goes there are no current studies about it. If you can give us more informations about the benign tumor we can answer in more details with possible treatment options. Some pics would be very useful as well.

Hello again - turmeric is very safe and side effects are extremely rare, usually only seen with ingestion of very high doses. Some dogs can experience stomach upset/vomiting, nausea, or diarrhea with high doses, so you can monitor Oscar for any of these signs. But, he will likely tolerate it just fine! No need to worry about this. Tumeric is a rather safe spice that is tolerated well in high quantities. It's possible that this will cause an upset stomach leading to vomiting or diarrhea, but I wouldn't expect any other complications beyond that. As a side note: tumeric is not very effective for arthritis, but probably won't hurt to give as a supplement.
