Is my dog bleeding like in heat one week after spay concerning?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed | Female | 3 years and 11 months old | 50 lbs

It has been one week since my dog has been spayed. She is now bleeding like she is in heat. She is otherwise fine ,sutures healing well ,drinking and eating normal ,and still wanting to be active ,but we are making sure she is not exerting herself. Do I have a reason to be concerned ,and if not how long should I expect this to stop before contacting my vet? They are on holiday break until Monday. Thank you.

Hello. As long as the blood is not excessive & seems to be decreasing day by day, there is no concern. This could just be some residual blood sloughing from the loss of hormones after spaying, & should stop very soon. Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach.
