Why is my dog's spay incision black with pus and not healing?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Hi were 3 weeks post op from a spay. 2 weeks post staples being put in. Does this look normal? We've been told she's going to take longer than normal to heal. She's had two courses of clavaseptin but have stopped them for a week. Follow up to other question... Is it normal for the skin to appear black in places? She's also had a bit of pus come out. The black isn't a scab it's the actual skin. Does she need anti-biotics again? She's in tomorrow at the vets to see if staples can be taken out.

Poor girl. She does apear to be taking a while to heal. If pus is present, then that is the reason for the delay in healing. The infection is not being controlled well with the antibiotics chosen. Another stronger antibiotic is needed here, so discuss this with your veterinarian. I do also see some granulation tissue there which is when the skin is trying to heal and close the incision. The wound still looks pretty fresh though, even though its been 3 weeks now. Based on what I see in the photo and your description, hydrotherapy of the area may be needed at this point, possible reclosure of the area with additional staples once these are removed, and a different antibiotic. I hope that this helps and best wishes getting this area to finally heal. Take care! : )
