My puppy has worms and diarrhea. Is ivermectin safe for deworming?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Hi we found a puppy abandoned by a garbage can a week ago and took her in. We’re not sure how old she is but she weighs 1.4 kg. We are worried she has worms because she has had some diarrhea and this morning this was some blood in it, but her energy level and appetite has been good. We are currently living in Belize and the only deworming med they have is ivermectin. All the doses i found online are too small for her because we only have a 2g tablet. What would be a safe dose for her?

I am currently working in Belize and we have many other dewormers. Do you not have any veterinarians near you? A better dewormer would be pyrantel pamoate. You cannot get a 2g Ivermectin tablet into a small enough dose for a 1.4kg puppy. Don't even try as you will kill her.
