My dog ate a whole pan of chocolate chip brownies. Is he in danger?

My dog ate a pan of chocolate chip cookie brownie the size of a pie pan and I don’t what to do because I thought chocolate killed dogs.

Yes, it can depending on the amount and type of chocolate Kevin ate. This may be enough to cause severe toxic symptoms. He has to see a vet now. Please take him into an ER vet clinic; if there isn't one in your area, there will be a vet on call for emergencies. The information to reach that vet is found on a clinic's answering machine or website.

Dark chocolate is more deadly than milk chocolate, as it takes less of it to cause chocolate toxicity. Even if Charlie ate 5 ounces (2 tablespoons equals an ounce) of dark chocolate, it would cause mild to moderate toxic symptoms. These include vomiting, GI upset, restlessness, and agitation. It can take a few hours for sign of chocolate toxicity to appear, so the best thing to do is to take Charlie into a vet right away. The vet can give him a shot to induced vomiting, and can give him activated charcoal to prevent any further absorption of theobromine (the toxic ingredient in chocolate).

Dog has eaten chocolate
In order to know if Barney is in any danger we need know how much chocolate he ate, what kind (dark, milk, bakers?), and how long ago. Based on his picture, Barney is a very small dog, so if he ate more than 1.5oz of milk chocolate (and any amount of a darker chocolate) he needs to go to the vet to vomit. Give them your regular vet a call right away and see if he can go straight there or if they recommend he go to an emergency clinic. Good luck!

In most dogs of this size one brownie ingested will not cause any toxic effects unless it was made with large amounts of dark chocolate or had marijuana inside. It is possible some GI upset can occur, as with any new/unusual food, such as vomiting or diarrhea. Symptoms of concern would include hyperactivity, trembling/tremors/seizures, rapid heart rate,, or seizures. These can be seen with chocolate toxicity (but as I said, not expected at this dose) and if they occur you need to see the veterinarian right away.

My dog consumed 3 ounces of milk chocolate chip cookies he weighs about 18 pounds and he doesn't look too good he seems really tired and whining should I be concerned
Poor Charlie! With that amount of chocolate and his weight, you can expect to see a mild reaction with symptoms such as vomiting, diarrhea, shaking, elevated heart rate, and increased urination. Now some dogs can react stronger to smaller amounts of chocolate than other dogs, and if he isn't looking good, seems very lethargic, and is whining, it's best that he's seen by a vet now to be safe. I would take him into an ER vet or find a vet on call to see him now so he can be evaluated and treated as needed.

With chocolate ‘the dose determines the poison’ so depending on how much he ate he may not be affected or might require intensive treatment. To make things a little more difficult, if you didn’t bake the cake yourself or if you used a mix it can be very difficult to estimate how much chocolate was in the cake. Cakes usually have cocoa powder which is very concentrated, and as little as 3 tablespoons of cocoa powder could be toxic to a 30 pound dog. If he ate the cake in the last couple of hours you could see an emergency vet to have them induce vomiting to be safe.

The effects of chocolate on a pet depends on a few factors: how big the pet is, how much they ate, and how dark the chocolate is. The darker the chocolate, the higher the concentration of theobromine, the ingredient that pets are sensitive to. Cocoa powder can have up to 10 percent theobromine. It's all dependent on how dark the chocolate is, where the cacao beans are grown and the brand. Hello and thank you for reaching out to Boop by Petco. These brownies are typically milk chocolate, which is not the most toxic type of chocolate for dogs. He is small, though, so it wouldn't take a lot of chocolate to make him sick. It is likely that your pet will develop some diarrhea for the next couple days. You may also notice that he seems anxious or hyperactive. The most dangerous part about chocolate is the affect it can have on the heart - it causes increased heart rate and can cause arrhythmias. If he ate the chocolate within the last 2-3 hours, I recommend inducing vomiting with a teaspoon of hydrogen peroxide. If he doesn't vomit after 15 minutes, this can be repeated once. Alternatively, you can monitor for the development of any clinical signs and have him seen by a vet if you see them! I hope this is helpful!

If this was a milk chocolate mix then he should only end up with mild to moderate symptoms: - GI signs (vomiting, diarrhea, loss of appetite) - Increase thirst and urination - Tachycardia (fast heart rate) and hyperexcitability, high blood pressure - Neurological signs If this was dark chocolate, bakers chocolate, semi-sweet chocolate, then he ate a toxic dose and should go to the ER as soon as possible! I suggest you do the following if decide not to go to the ER now: 1. If he will eat it, give him one or two slices of plain bread now. Sometimes that helps with the diarrhea and will slow down the GI tract. 2. Then, no food for 6-8 hours. Water should be available at all times. 3. If no vomiting after 6-8 hours, then start feeding small amounts of a bland diet every few hours. Bland foods like: scrambled eggs, plain rice, plain pasta, boiled chicken or turkey, human baby foods (meat flavors). No butter, oil or spices on the food. 4. That amount of chocolate can cause mild to moderate toxicity. He may experience vomiting, diarrhea, restlessness, hyperactivity, and hypertension. If the ingestion was recent, he should be examined by a vet. Your vet can induce vomiting and give some activated charcoal to help decrease the chance of toxicity. Poor Fluffy! If his vomit smells like chocolate, I would suspect that he has gotten into chocolate. Chocolate is toxic to dogs, and vomiting is a sign of that toxicity. There can be other more serious chocolate toxicity symptoms including heart failure, seizures, and death. I would take Fluffy into an emergency vet immediately for treatment. Please take him into an ER vet clinic; if there isn't one in your area, there will be a vet on call for emergencies.
