My Amstaff attacked my dog during laser play. Is this normal?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | American Staffordshire Terrier | Female | unspayed | 3 years and 8 months old

I have two dogs...one is a pitbull/ lab mix she is 7 yrs old and one us an American Staffordshire Terrier she is 3 yrs old. Last evening my dogs were chasing a laser pointer and my Amstaff all of a sudden attacked my other dog and injured her...is this normal for an Amstaff...or was it just because they were playing and they got hyper and it got out of hand?

I hate to hear this happened. The breed of the dog does not dictate if they will react aggressively. It's the personality of the dog and the pack dynamic. It's possible the laser was viewed as a high value item to Zoey and she was trying to protect her item. Unfortunately, it's impossible to know for sure. Some dogs also get anxiety when the environment is high energy and they lash out in an attempt to stop it. I don't recommend to play with both dogs at the same time with a high value items. Keep them securely separated (have them shut behind doors in different rooms) for such games. Don't put them together again until they have both calmed down. You may also work with a professional trainer who can help you manage the 'pack'. I hope this helps.
