French Bulldog nares surgery: Is an open incision normal? Cone time?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | French Bulldog | Male | neutered | 1 year and 1 month old | 30 lbs

Hi there ! My dog Louis 13 month old French bulldog, got his stenoic nares surgery done 5 days ago and we noticed his left side looks a little open? Is this normal / the healing process? We have left the cone on 24/7 and been watching him always so just wondering if this is normal healing process? My vet used dissolvable stitches. There is no blood, some discharge but not dripping. Thanks so much! Also how long does the cone need to be left on for nares surgery? Thanks again!

This does look like the incision has opened a little. It will heal fine without further treatment. It is important to keep the cone on until the incisions are fully healed, usually 10-14 days. If this opens further or the discharge becomes yellow or has a foul odor then please bring him in right away for a recheck. Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach to help you care for Louis.
