Can my aggressive old dog take hemp calming chews for holiday visits?

Hi, Doctor, thank you for taking my question. I have a 13 yr old Maltese male and he is very aggressive to other dogs. My daughter will bring her Australian sheepdog puppy to our house on Thanksgiving. I'm thinking of giving my dog some organic hemp/valerian calming chews (hemp seed oil 125 mg & hemp protein powder 75 mg). Considering my dog's age, do you see any problem with that?

As of yet, we have very little research on CBD oil in veterinary patients, so we cannot make any recommendations one way or the other about this product - we do not know what an appropriate dose might be, and if there are any potential health concerns or drug interactions in dogs. In addition, because it's a schedule 1 drug, it's illegal for us to prescribe or recommend. I would not do it, I would keep Waldo in his own room alone for Thanksgiving. Hank is a 13 year old doggie. He has issues with walking in bare floors, and due to this, has set up camp in the hallway. I have been giving him CBD oil so it might help some of his anxiety. Am I doing the right thing?

Does CBD oil help with over protective dogs
CBD is an anectdotal drug, which means that no formal studies have been completed in pets to the point where we prescribe it with confidence that it will work across the board. You have to try it and see if it helps your pet. We also have no authorization to recommend it to any pets until it goes through the legal system. You can certainly try any over the counter medication, including CBD oil, as a homeopathic option and see if it helps with your pets aggression. However, with any medication or supplement, you will have to still do formal training on your pet to help resolve any behavioral issues you are seeing. I would also recommend trying Zylkene supplements for any anxiety or behavioral issues with your pet. Best of luck with Oscar moving forward. Take acre. : )

You do need to have Zoe seen by a vet to see if there is anything that can be given to her to make her more comfortable. If paying for a vet is an issue, you can see if your vet accepts payment plans, if there is a low cost clinic in your area, or you can apply for Care Credit online. There is also an organization called Red Rover that give grants for treatment of sick animals, and you can see if you qualify for one of their grants. Best Friends also has a list of resources that offer financial assistance on their website. I'd also see if you can borrow money from family and friends. http://www.humanesociety.org/
