Puppy bled after first erection. Is it normal? Should I neuter?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Miniature Poodle | Male | unneutered | 9 months and 3 days old | 12 lbs

My 9-month-old puppy dripped 2-3 drops of blood upon having his first erection but his penis returned to normal after 25 mins and he's fine now. If there were an infection in his prepuce, urine or prostate, what treatment would be best for him? Any medicine to apply on him? Or how to clean his penis if he were infected? Is it really dangerous considering he's back to normal now? Would I need any operation or surgery on him? Vets are not reliable in my location.

As long as his penis went back to normal and you are not seeing him drip any more blood you don't need to do anything. I would not get worried about one incident. That being said, once they start doing this, especially at his age, it can become a life-long problem so I suggest you have him neutered. Then you would not have to worry about prostate issues, persistent erections, etc. The blood dripped out because it pooled in the urethra because of the erection or he injured his os penis (bone inside the penis). It is definitely not an infection so don't worry about that. Just keep monitoring him and consider neutering.
