Why does my dog make a wet breathing noise that stops when he gasps?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | West Highland White Terrier | Male | unneutered | 6 years and 10 months old

What can cause a noise similar to wet crepitations in the lungs that stops when the dog gasps? (It's not that they can't be listened, they stop, because I hear the breath perfectly) through the stethoscope

It might be upper airway noise that you’re hearing that stops when the dog’s mouth is open. It’s a little difficult to know what you’re describing without being able to hear it in person. If Westin is having difficulty breathing I would definitely recommend having him examined by a vet.
