My small dog yelps when picked up under front legs. Is she in pain?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Small (up to 22lb) | Female | spayed | 10 lbs

My shizthu Brussels griffin dog is yelping whenever anyone picks her up. Only specifically right under the front two armpits. She doesn’t scream when you pick her up from the side or even at the rib cage. She was also yelling while on the bed and we were petting her and cuddling with her. Don’t see anything noticeable. Only started this morning.

Thank you for submitting your question regarding Lacey. I recommend that she sees her veterinarian. Small breed dogs are prone to neck and/or back pain. It can present as yelping. Her veterinarian will carefully examine her to determine if she is painful. If so, x-rays may be needed. In the meantime, keep her quiet and carry her as much as possible. Do not give any over-the-counter pain medications as these can be toxic to dogs. I hope this information helps!
