Cat constipated after new grain-free food. Vet or home care?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Mixed Breed Small (up to 22lb) | Female | spayed | 10 lbs

We switched our cat to some grain free food recently and she seems to be constipated, she's eaten noticeably less and is visibly sluggish and low energy. Do we need to go to the vet for this or can we help her get some fiber and get moving on our own?

Thank you for submitting your question regarding Suki. I recommend that she sees a veterinarian if she is lethargic and not eating well. Mild constipation can sometimes be treated with fluids and a stool softener, but she could require an enema. Her veterinarian will examine her and determine the best course of action. I hope this information helps!
