My dog's ear has been bothering her since puppyhood. What's wrong?

My dogs ear is not been good since a pup. She turnt 2 in September. This is what is going on with her.

Thank you for contacting Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach with your question about Bella. If this is a continuing problem, I'm wondering if it's allergies. Has she seen a vet for it? If not, she needs to see a vet to have the cause of this diagnosed so she can be treated correctly. I hope this helps.

Thanks for using Boop by Petco! This is possibly due to allergies. It really comes down to figuring out what is causing her allergies so that they can be treated or the specific allergen avoided. A secondary infection is likely and also needs to be addressed. There are many things that can cause allergies though in most cases they can be broken down into 3 big categories: flea, food and environmental allergies. Allergies are usually worked up in a stepwise fashion starting with flea allergies as this is the easiest and cheapest to take care of. If not on a flea preventative, then it would be a good idea to get started on one. If already on one then it would be a good idea to change to something else (there are many new products out in the market). If not improved in 1-3 months then it is time to move on and check for food allergies by switching to a novel diet (new protein and new carbohydrate). If that does not seem to be the issue then you are left out having to check for envir

Hi and thanks for posting on Boop by Petco! It is hard to say exactly what is causing the itching the and scratching in the ears without examining Luna first but it could be due to a yeast or bacterial infection or perhaps just a ball of ear wax stuck down in her ear canal. If the itching is more on the outside of the ear than on the inside, it could be due to a flea allergy. Fleas like to hang out by the ears, neck, and tail base region. If you've been cleaning out the ears frequently and she is still itching, you may want to have Luna examined by your veterinarian to check for an ear infection, fleas, and to get a better peak down in the ear canals. Your veterinarian may take a sample of the material in each ear to check for an infection. Luna may need ear antibiotics or other medications as needed. My pet is having redish ears from inside and it is aching a lot.
It's possible Bella is having an allergic reaction or has an ear infection. I recommend to have her examined within the next 24 hours. If she appears to be in distress or pain, have her examined quickly. The aching is concerning for pain. Hi, thanks for using Boop by Petco! I would recommend having your vet look in to the ear canals with an otoscope. Sometimes there is discharge deeper in the ear canal that can not be seen from the outside. If that is the case the Vet can use a Q-tip safely to remove some of the wax and look under the microscope to see if it is a yeast or bacterial infection. Some dogs will shake and scratch with even mild overgrowth of bacteria or yeast. Otherwise she may just be itchy due to allergies and you can try an antihistamine. See the links below. My dog has an ear infection what can I use to help it clear up? I noticed it 2 days ago and cleaned it with some vinegar and water
Thank you for submitting your question regarding Bella. I recommend that she sees her veterinarian. I agree that her ear is likely infected. The veterinarian will examine her including inspecting the ear canals with a special instrument known as an otoscope. A sample will be taken from each ear canal to evaluate under the microscope. This will confirm an infection and determine the type. For example, she could have a yeast or bacterial infection or a combination of both. In other cases, ear mites are possible. Based on these results, appropriate treatment can be started. An ear cleaner is usually commonly used to cleanse and dry the canal. Then a medication is applied to treat the infection. Ear infections are painful and require prompt treatment. If left untreated, chronic changes can result that will predispose her to future problems. I hope this information helps!

Hi, my cat Bella has been scratching both sides of her neck and in her right ear frequently today. She hasn't used any flea/tick productions for a month now and has never had any issues until now. Should I be concerned?
Hi, thanks for using Boop by Petco! Bella likely has an ear infection at least in her right ear and maybe her left since she is scratching that side. Ear infections and scratching the skin can be a sign of allergies. Food or environmental allergens can be the underlying cause. Ear infections are most likely from an overgrowth of yeast or bacteria and rarely at Bella's age ear mites. I do recommend making an appointment with your Vet to have her ears and skin looked at. The Vet will take a sample of the wax from both ears and look at it under the microscope to determine if yeast, bacteria or ear mites are the cause of her infection. They they will prescribe an ear wash and medicated drops to be applied to her ears. They may also give her steroids to relieve the generalized scratching. I do recommend all new growths new evaluated by your regular veterinarian to determine if they are malignant (cancer) or not. However, I am referring more to allergies causing an ongoing reaction resulting in licking and scratching different parts of the body not just a transient allergic reaction that happens just once. My pup has a red rash mark on the inside if his left ear. His right ear is completely clear. He doesn’t appear bothered by it, isn’t itching it or anything. It has been there for approximately two weeks. Should I take him in? What do you think it is?
