My dog gets diarrhea mixing wet and dry food. What's the right ratio?

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Large (61lb +) | Male | 1 year and 4 months old | 68 lbs

I'm very confused when it comes to my dogs eating habits he would not eat dry food barely but when I mix dry and a whole can of wet he will eat it all but have the runs. Am I giving him too much wet dog food if so how much should I give him and what will be the recommended ratio for both dry and wet he's about 85 to 90 pounds right now.

Trevor may be having diarrhea because he isn't used to the wet food. I would start off mixing the dry food with 25% of the can of wet food, feed that for a few days, then put in 50% of the wet food, feed for a few days, then 75% of the wet food, feed for a few days, and then finally give him 100% of the can of wet food with the dry.

At her age it may be the food, a virus or even stress. Go back to the food you know she did well on without problems. If it continues then get her checked by your vet. Monitor for any vomiting or no appetite as this may be an indication there is something else going on.

What can you do to help prevent the animal from getting diarrhea with the new food?
When switching to a new food, I recommend that you mix it slowly into the old food over 2-3 weeks. So, for example, the first 5 days feed 75% old food, and 25% new food. The next 5 days feed 50/50. The next 5 days 75% new food and 25% old food. If you see nausea, vomiting, or diarrhea during any of this period, then back off and transition a little slower. If the symptoms continue, then your pet may have a dietary intolerance to the new food and it should not be used.

My dog has mild diarrhea/loose stools but he is asking completely fine still drinking and eating. My brother gave him a wet dog food can a week ago which he is used go dry food since day one. Could that be the cause?
If diarrhea is related to something they ate, it should start within a day of eating the food. The diarrhea could be due to many conditions including eating something he shouldn’t have, bacterial over growth, parasites or even organ disease. If the diarrhea has continued beyond 24 hours, I recommend to have him examined by the veterinarian. With continued diarrhea, there are often bacterial shifts in the gut that will make matters worse regardless of the initial cause. Make sure to bring in a sample of fresh stool. The doctor will check him for parasites and bacterial over growth. Many times a bland diet can help and then a slow, gradual introduction to the normal food can be done. A bland diet can consist of 25% boiled white meat chicken and 75% boiled white rice. This should all be plain. A good diet in general is Royal Canin. It is low residue and highly digestible. Hello! Dogs are creatures of habit when it comes to their diets and gastrointestinal distress when being fed a novel food is common. Since Toby is normally fed kibble, being fed anything outside of that will be upsetting to his GI tract. I would recommend feeding him a dry kibble that he does well on and not feeding him anything outside that diet. I hope this is helpful! Thanks for using Boop by Petco!

Thank you for submitting your question regarding Ranger. If the diarrhea started after adding the canned food to his diet, then this is likely the cause. If the diarrhea has been intermittent or present prior to the diet change, then I worry that there is a different cause. In this case, he should see his veterinarian for fecal testing. Otherwise, you can try to add a probiotic such as Fortiflora. This can help with stool quality. A different brand of canned food or a smaller amount may help as well. Purina ProPlan Sensitive Skin and Stomach is a good formula for mild GI upset. I hope this information helps!

Dog has had diarrhea since canned dog food. She has been wormed and all. She eats and drinks normal and plays. I just noticed it happened after switching to canned dog food. I went back to her normal dry food. How long till stool gets normal?
It may take another two to three days. If it is severe and she’s lethargic then please take her in for treatment. Many dogs have sensitive stomachs and the canned food is too rich for them. Yes, it could give Johny diarrhea if it's a sudden change in food, which cause GI upset in dogs. If you want to give him wet food, you can mix it in with his dry food, which should help avoid GI upset.

Buddy is adorable! Science diet is a great food and I highly recommend it. I would start by mixing 75% old food 25% new food and feed that for a couple of days. Then go to 50% old and 50% new food, and feed that for a couple of days. Move him to 25% old food and 75% new food for another couple of days, and then feed him 100% new food only. It's fine to add in some ProPlan canned food as well, and you can slowly decrease the amount you give him over two weeks until he is eating the dry food only. I hope this helps!

Can you feed your dog another brand of wet food than the dry food? Like wholehearted dry food and pedigree puppy wet food.
Yes this is fine to do. Slowly replace some of the dry food with wet food, starting with just a teaspoon and working up to however much Duncan needs over 3-5 days.
