Why is my cat foaming at the mouth after wearing a flea collar?

Pet's info: Cat | Mixed Breed | Male | neutered | 5 years and 4 months old | 12 lbs

My cat as frothed at the mouth twice in the past few days. Only thing different is a flea collar. She is eating well and doesn't act sick.

It could be the flea collar, as this frothing at the mouth can be a sign of flea treatment toxicity. Take the collar off Molly. Wait a few days, and apply a spot on treatment like Revolution or Advantage.

Advantage spray shouldn’t be toxic if a typical dose was ingested by your cat but it does sound like she doesn’t like the taste. It might be best to wash the product off with dish soap, but she’ll need another product for flea prevention. You could ask your vet for a prescription topical, or something like Frontline (fipronil only) would be safe to use after the Advantage spray. Be sure to apply it to the back of her neck where she can’t groom.

These flea collars are extremely toxic and one should not use them anymore. Tetrachlorvinphos toxic to the nervous system and likely to cause cancer. The collar could indeed have caused these signs in your kitty. There are quite a few flea and tick medications on the market, such as spot-ons that are not detrimental to the health of your cat. Here are safe flea products: Spot-ons and/or chews Advantage, Advantix Advantage Multi (Advocate in the UK) Frontline (ticks as well) Bravecto spot on (ticks as well) - for cats, Simparica, Nexgard Revolution (stronghold in the UK) Tablets: comfortis (will only kill fleas once) Collar: Seresto (ticks as well)

Very concerned about my new kitten who started foaming at the mouth on his 2nd day home. I took him to the emergency vet today where he was given fluids & anti-nausea meds. They did blood work & an X-ray but couldn’t define a cause. I’m home with him
Poor kitten! Excessive drooling like that can definitely be caused by nausea, as well as irritation of the mouth, throat, nose, or stomach. Getting into something potentially toxic or bad tasting, flea and tick treatments for dogs accidentally used on cats, or underlying illness can also cause foaming like this. I would definitely take him to another vet ASAP since it is so severe.

I put a flea collar around my cat and now he'll sit in one spot for a bit then run around almost like freaking out. Hes never worn any collar before and he does have fleas all on him
Flea collars are pretty much poor products unless you get a brand like Sentry. I can give you an excellent flea treatment program for Meow Meow, as I recommend stopping using the collar. First, I would give him Capstar. It's a one time pill that starts killing fleas within 30 minutes. Then follow up with a spot on treatment, such as Advantage or Revolution. This is a treatment that has to be used once a month. You will also have to disinfect the environment. Wash his bedding in hot soapy water, and vacuum the furniture and carpet surfaces. You can use a spray to kill fleas in the house, such as Indorex, or a flea bomb would work well to kill the fleas in the home. Best of luck.

Foaming at the mouth in a cat after medication is typically a sign that the medication was either bitter tasting to them or it just wasn't pleasant. You can try the medicaiton again, giving it slowly this time and see what response Kitty has. If he foams again, then you can ask your vet if there is another flavor that you can get this medicaiton in, that is more tolerable for Kitty. Best wishes and take care.

Cats are very sensitive to flea medication, so Mocha may get sick from grooming. If you see muscle twitches, excessive drooling, staggering, vomiting, diarrhea, or difficulty breathing, take her into a vet immediately. You will still be able to pet her, avoid the collar area.

Flea collars can cause reactions in cats, as they are exquisitely sensitive to flea medication. Given that Blue has wounds, I think an oral flea treatment would be best for her. I recommend Bravecto. You can get it from the vet. Keep in mind that fleas live in the environment, not on the animal, so you will have to treat the home as well. Wash their bedding in hot soapy water, and vacuum the furniture and carpet surfaces. You can use a spray to kill fleas in the house, such as Indorex, or a flea bomb would work well to kill the fleas in the home. Best of luck, I hope this helps!

My cat has a cough which seemed to start after stopping the use of a flea collar. Could the coughing be connected to the collar?
It's very unlikely, if at all I would expect the collar to be a problem when it is on (too tight) but not when it is off. Cough in cats can be caused by asthma or other lung diseases and infections, I would recommend having it checked by your vet.

Poor kitty! There are lots of products on that market, some better than others. Many over the counter products contain older drug technology. The only collar that I use is a collar called Seresto. Oral flea preventatives are also a good option. Topical Revolution works well too. She should heal just fine now that the collar is off, and I would prefer to use an oral now to avoid any further skin irritation.

It sounds like she either has fleas or she has something on her coat (like a foreign substance) that she is licking off. Cats often foam/drool when they taste something they don't like. I suggest you bathe her (if she will let you) and start her on a good flea prevention to cover all the bases.
