Is low phosphorus dangerous for cats on binders? How often to test?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Domestic Shorthair | Male | neutered | 19 years and 10 months old | 9.5 lbs

Is it dangerous if a cats phosphorus level falls too low? Tony takes a phosphorus binder and I mix the prescribed amount into each of his meals but I only do labwork every 3 mths, if it should get too low am I waiting too long in between bloodwork tests? Thx

Yes, HYPOphosphatemia can be dangerous but I have never seen that happen in case where a cat has renal failure and is being treated with a phosphate binder. HYPERphosphatemia is much worse to have. You are not likely to cause hypophosphatemia so I would not worry about that. Labwork every 2-3 months is fine to do for monitoring. If you are worried you should ask your vet since they are most familiar with his case.
