My dog is having seizures. How much clonazepam can I give him safely?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Chihuahua | Male | unneutered | 35 lbs

I'm desperate. My dog is having seizure-like fits and screams out in the agony. I live in a small town and can't get to a vet till tomorrow. The only thing I have is clonazepam 1 mg. How much can I give him until we can get him to the vet tomorrow. We are going to have to probably put him to sleep because we don't have the money for treatment. Please help! I'm devastated!

I'm very sorry that Gus is having this issue. It really would be best if you could find an emergency vet to take him to especially if the Clonazepam does not help. We don't want him to suffer. The dose range for clonazepam is 0.1 to 0.5 mg/kg orally every 8 hours. So, if he is 35 pounds, the high end of the dose would be 0.25mg (1/4 of the 1mg tablet). You can give him that up to every 8 hours.
