My dog vomited after eating and is lethargic. Should I see a vet?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Medium (23 - 60lb) | Female | spayed | 4 years and 11 months old | 49 lbs

Emma vomited 30-45 minutes after eating breakfast. Very lethargic looking, she went to her bed then snuck downstairs to go outside, began eating grass and vomited again. She is now resting. Should I be worried? Does this warrant a trip to the vet or can I wait a couple days.

I would not be overly worried about a single episode of vomiting but I cannot make this call for you. You know your dog best so if you are worried then you should take her in now for an exam. If you want to just watch her for a few hours you can. I would not wait days though. If you monitor her for a few hours and the vomiting continues or she starts with other symptoms (diarrhea, not eating, etc) then she should definitely see a vet.

If she seems fine, and is eating and drinking normally without vomiting you are probably ok to just continue to monitor her. She already vomited so any induction of vomiting is unnecessary at this point. If she starts vomiting more, has diarrhea, or doesn't want to eat, or seems ill in any way, then she needs to see a vet.
