My dog ate sausage, now vomiting and has bloody diarrhea. What to do?

Pet's info: Dog | Havanese | Female | spayed | 2 years and 10 months old | 11.5 lbs

Friday evening my Two year old Havanese female ate a small piece of sausage that fell off a pizza. About 8 hrs. later vomiting and diarrhea. 16 hrs. later no vomiting but bloody red diarrhea. Drinking small amount of water - no hard food given. Is there anything I should be doing?

The problem is that even a small piece of sausage can cause a dog problems because of the fat content. You are seeing that with the vomiting and diarrhea, and now bloody diarrhea. Because her symptoms have progressed to blood in her poop, it's time to see a vet. Please take her into an ER vet clinic; if there isn't one in your area, there will be a vet on call for emergencies. The information to reach that vet is found on a clinic's answering machine or website. I hope this helps!

Hi and thanks for using Boop by Petco! Sorry to hear about Daisy. Contact your local rescue groups, humane societies, low-cost clinics in your area and seek help. Persistent vomiting, bloody diarrhea and lack of appetite are emergent clinic signs due to fluid/electrolyte losses. This leads to dehydration, weakness, and further downward deterioration unless the vomiting stops and the appetite returns. I would advise taking Daisy to your vet as soon as possible to have her evaluated. Many causes are possible including intestinal parasites, dietary indiscretion (eating things dogs aren't supposed to), other dietary problems, gastrointestinal inflammation/infection from various sources, toxin exposure, foreign body ingestion, GI ulceration, side effects from drugs or products used, or even problems outside of the gut including pancreatitis, liver/kidney problems, among many others. Vomiting can be observed with conditions such as gastroenteritis, pancreatitis, dietary indiscretion, gastrointestinal foreign body ingestion and obstruction, among other possibilities. For this reason, I highly recommend that you have Shadow evaluated by a veterinarian for further assessment and treatment as soon as possible as I am afraid he is likely becoming dehydrated. They would be able to check for these possibilities and also check his hydration status and give him medications to make him feel better. Good luck!

Hello I have a Toy Poodle 3 years old yesterday he ate corned beef and has been trying to vomit a couple of times then when I took him out this morning he had a runny poop and some blood came out what can i do thank you
He could be suffering from pancreatitis which is a serious medical problem. It is common in small dogs after eating a meal high in fat. I recommend a veterinary exam and treatment with fluids, and medication to control the diarrhea and nausea. If left untreated this can become life threatening and can damage the pancreas which increases the incidence of diabetes in the future. It could be something Scarlett ate causing her to vomit and have diarrhea, and the diarrhea could cause irritation to the GI tract leading to the blood. If she isn't fully vaccinated, it could be she has a serious illness such as parvovirus. Given that she has been having diarrhea and vomiting, and now there is blood in her diarrhea, it's time to see a vet. Please take her into an ER vet clinic; if there isn't one in your area, there will be a vet on call for emergencies. Poor pup! The vomiting and diarrhea could be due to eating the human food but other things like bacterial over growth, parasites (worms and giardia) or even something more severe like an intestinal blockage could be to blame. The blood indicates that his intestines are severely inflamed. I recommend to have your pup examined by the veterinarian today if at all possible. He can receive medications that can make him feel better and resolve the inflammation much faster (and hopefully stop any progression of the condition). Sometimes times a bland diet can help and then a slow, gradual introduction to the normal food can be done. A bland diet can consist of 25% boiled white meat chicken and 75% boiled white rice. This should all be plain. Make sure your pup is drinking water. Break up the meals into smaller amounts than normal and fed more frequently. I hope your pup starts feeling better quickly! Hi, thanks for using Boop by Petco! Poor Sassy! The blood in the stool indicates inflammation in the colon and tends to occur after several days of diarrhea. When blood is seen it is best to have a Vet exam and medications started. She is very small and dehydration is a concern. You can try a bland diet of boiled chicken or hamburger with rice. You can also add a little meat flavored baby food on top to tempt her to eat. Considering a probiotic like Purina Fortiflora may also help. There are no safe human drugs that we can recommend. Causes of diarrhea are: intestinal parasites, viral or bacterial infections, pancreatitis, primary intestinal disease (IBD), dietary indiscretion, food allergy/intolerance, reaction to a new treat/food/table food. This blood in his diarrhea could be due to intestinal worms, eating something rotten, a foreign body, parvo if he isn't vaccinated, or a severe stomach illness. He should definitely see a vet for this. As long as he is otherwise ok, it can wait until the morning. If he starts vomiting, has more bloody diarrhea, is very lethargic, stops drinking water, or is vomiting water, take him into an ER vet immediately. I hope this helps!

Vomiting with bloody diarrhea is a situation which requires veterinary attention. You don't mention the age of your dog but parvovirus would be a possibility in a younger dog. Other possible causes would include severe GI parasitism, gastroenteritis, hemorrhagic gastroenteritis, ingestion of a foreign object, and inflammatory bowel disease. With a combination of vomiting and blood diarrhea your dog can become dehydrated quickly, so a vet visit is recommended ASAP. They may test your dog's stool sample and take an x-ray to help determine the cause of his symptoms.

This is likely unrelated to the surgeries in June. This may be transient and not occur again. However, if this continues, I recommend that you have Hunny evaluated by your veterinarian for further assessment and treatment.
